Adenosine rebound: the debt comes due
Every hour you're awake, your brain accumulates a molecule called adenosine. It binds to receptors and each binding event is a small message: you have been awake a while. Stack enough of them and you feel tired. This is your sleep-pressure meter, and it is honest.
Caffeine is shaped closely enough like adenosine to occupy those same receptors — but it doesn't trigger them. It's a blank key in the lock. The meter is still filling; you just can't read it.
Here's the part most people miss: the adenosine never went anywhere. It kept being produced for the entire four, five, six hours your coffee was working. It just couldn't dock. Caffeine's half-life in healthy adults averages about five to six hours, so as it clears, receptors open in a rush — and the whole backlog binds nearly at once.
You don't return to where you would have been without coffee. You arrive somewhere below it, faster, because a fatigue signal that should have risen gradually all morning gets delivered in a single wave instead. That is the 2 p.m. wall, and it's mathematically a function of when you had the cup.
