Distribution matters more than the daily total
Most people eat protein in a pattern researchers call skewed: very little at breakfast, some at lunch, most at dinner. A typical day looks like 10g, 16g, then 63g.
A seven-day crossover feeding study compared that pattern against an even one — roughly 30g at each of three meals — holding total daily protein identical. The even distribution produced 25% higher 24-hour muscle protein synthesis. Same protein, same calories, different result. The advantage held after a week of habituation, so it wasn't a novelty effect.
The reason is a threshold. Muscle protein synthesis is stimulated by roughly 20 to 30g of high-quality protein in a sitting, and it saturates — pushing to 60 or 90g at one meal doesn't produce proportionally more. A 10g breakfast doesn't clear the bar at all, so that meal contributes nothing to the signal. A 63g dinner clears it once, then wastes the excess on other purposes.
So the practical question isn't how much protein you eat. It's how many times a day you cross the threshold. Most people manage once. Protein coffee, for the right person, turns that one into two.
